Does Life Imitate FBI Drama?
Have you ever watched an FBI drama and wondered how they so effortlessly grab cell phone and Internet records? Life
imitates art in this case of the real FBI cutting corners it seems.
In real life, FBI agents have been known to use less-than-honorable tactics to get what they want, according to a recent news story. It seems that these particular agents were expected to get access to phone records without a court order, and some even submitted fake emergency letters to phone carriers.
On television, what generally happens is the FBI already magically has the records and access, or you see them cajoling a witness, threatening with a court order.
A good example is in the Criminal Minds episode 3.11 Birthright. In one of the climactic scenes, FBI agents seek two young women who’ve been kidnapped at a farm property. The wife of the unsub is asked if they can search the property. When she balks at the idea, Agent Hotchner tells her that they can get a search warrant. In this case, she let them do the search.
Of course, many weigh in on the side of caution, protecting other’s rights to privacy. Some feel that they’d rather sacrifice a little privacy if it means they’ll be safer. Which is more important to you, privacy or safety?
