FBI Dramas: Top 5 Reasons Your Kids Can’t Watch
I’m an immense fan of FBI and crime drama, and at the same time, it scares me, but only for the children. For many parents, it’s not so much what your child watches, but who they watch it with. We talked a while back about shows that teens should watch, and those ideas still stand. For adults, it’s good fun, but it never hurts to shine a careful light every now and then.
Kids and teens of this generation are part of a unique group. They are growing up at a time in which the Internet and media are pretty much in their pockets. Whether it is via cell phones, computers or free WiFi, TV media is everywhere. Here are my Top 5 Reasons Why Your Kids Can’t Watch (crime drama that is…), after the cut:
- Some programs regularly feature children being portrayed as victims of crime, particularly of kidnap and/or sexual assault.
- Some shows don’t present reality very well, in that they may present stereotypical representations of a criminal, a victim, a police or investigative officer.
- Although children and teens know these programs aren’t real, they are still affected by what they see in ways even they can’t understand.
- Increasingly we’ve seen some crime dramas capture the drama of real events. This can backfire when a character similar to a celebrity, i.e. Paris Hilton or Britney Spears are the spotlight. This is also part of the reason that some adult TV viewers have increasingly abandoned TV and newspaper for the Internet according to Pew Research.
- In general, our latest generation of kids are the most tolerant of all other generations, particularly in the areas of immigration, race and homosexuality. This is partially due to what they are exposed to in the media. Tolerance is great, as long as it’s tempered with doing what you think is best for your kids.
