Joe Mantegna Gets His Jutsu On In "Redbelt"
Joe Mantegna (David Rossi) of Criminal Minds is set to star in David Mamet’s film, Redbelt, that will debut in April as a part of the Tribeca Film Festival. The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Emily Mortimer, Alison Braga and Tim Allen.
A penchant for samurai and fight films is the inspiration for this film. Redbelt follows a very talented Jujutsu instructor (Ejiofor) who avoids competition bouts so he can train faithful students in self-defense.
Things change when he saves the life of a famous action star (Tim Allen’s character) and from getting a horrible beating. His actions lead to a job in the film industry, however, it also puts him in the position to do the one thing he’s always avoided…competing in a prize fight.
Some of the faithful students are soldiers, cops and bodyguards. Is this where Joe comes in? I’d love to see him take a guy down with Jujutsu. I’m also a fan of fight films, and am looking forward to it. What can I say? I was probably one of the few kids who really loved those Karate Kid films. Redbelt is set to release in NY and LA on May 2, with a national release on May 9.
