FBI Dramas: "88 Minutes" Review

by Alexandra on April 26th, 2008

The latest FBI movie to hit the big screen is called 88 Minutes, and stars Al Pacino, Alicia Witt and Leelee Sobieski.  I didn’t know what to think of this one at first. I don’t remember who said it, but someone had characterized the trailer as Al Pacino portraying Al Pacino. Of course, being a Pacino fan, I took exception to that comment, saw the trailer above, and the movie myself. What follows is a short synopsis, and my spoilery review after the jump!

In 88 Minutes, Dr. Jack Gramm (Al Pacino) is a college professor who works part-time for the FBI as a forensic psychologist. He gets a death threat indicating he has only 88 minutes to live.

What prompts the call is a series of events stemming from some expert testimony he gives regarding a series of murders. Because he has no idea why his life is in danger, he tries to narrow down the list of possibilities by meeting with an ex-girlfriend, a serial killer on death row and a problem student.

My Thoughts

What I liked about this movie? Beautiful Seattle scenery in the locations. What I disliked? Lack of a believable plot. Pacino does bring life to the character, and generally he does for all his roles, being such a talented actor.

However, the killer, or unsub in this film is annoying. Throughout the movie, he places little “time” reminders for Dr. Gramm. He writes one on the back window of the doctor’s car, and later the doctor finds another written in the office. I can really see this stuff being parodied on Mad TV or SNL. (I’d love to write it myself!).

I almost wondered if the “killer” is really a large group of people who just decided to play with Pacino’s mind. I half expected him to take out his wallet in Starbucks to pay for his latte, and find a note from the killer which reads “20 minutes”, and then Pacino, cursing out loud, “Dammit to hell…another freaking note”. Get me an extra shot…I want this bastard.”

Seriously, if you are a hard core Pacino fan, you’ll see this movie no matter what anyone says. If you don’t mind the plot, I would recommend it.
