"Fringe" Video: A Peek Behind The Curtain From J.J. Abrams

by Alexandra on August 8th, 2008

In this latest Fringe behind-the-scenes video, show runner J.J. Abrams reveals what makes this Fox TV series such a compelling concept. Check out a synopsis of the video, as well as what some critics have to say about the series after the cut:

It starts out with having people that you really care about being placed in some terrifying situations. It’s very obvious that Abrams feels he has the best cast you could possibly have, and we tend to agree.

All of the actors come from some pretty solid roles and backgrounds, and therefore are already used to bringing above-average skills to the screen. Cast members are Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Lance Reddick, Kirk Acevedo, Mark Valley, Blair Brown, Jasika Nicole.

Abrams reveals that Anna Torv brings a “thoughtfulness and intelligence” to the role of FBI agent Olivia Dunham. He says of John Noble that his character, Walter Bishop, is a sort of “untrustworthy mentor”. Finally, it’s noted that Joshua Jackson as Peter Bishop has the task, and does quite well, the job of bringing charm and wit, as he portrays the son of the institutionalized scientist.

Abrams comments on how horrific some of the Fringe scenarios are, and that they are in fact nightmarish.

So, what we know from this video that we possibly did not know before is this.  J.J. Abrams has tricked Fox into taking us into his nightmares, and many of us suspect we are all the better for it. I also wanted to share what critics have to say so far about this series:

“I was gripped and entertained from beginning to end.” TIME MAGAZINE

Do I want to watch another one? Definitely. I’ll be surprised if I see a better pilot…for this fall.”

TIME MAGAZINE

“The pilot script and story is very compelling.” VARIETY

“J.J. Abrams’ FRINGE Brings ‘X-Files’ Weirdness Back to FOX.” NEW YORK MAGAZINE

“Worth a season pass? Yes. An ‘X-Files’ with the mythology laid out from the get-go, FRINGE promises to ride grody special effects, the chemistry of its oddball trio, and Lance Reddick’s basso profundo to the genre promised land. After watching the pilot, we can only say: More, please.” NEW YORK MAGAZINE

“It’s super.”  “…it’s great…” E! ONLINE

“I’d be shocked if we see another fall pilot this year as good as this one. Scary, funny, suspenseful and super-slick FRINGE will fire imaginations and, like the three Abrams-scripted pilots before it, leave viewers craving more.”  AIN’T IT COOL NEWS

“FRINGE is officially the must see new show of the fall.” THE TV ADDICT
