Alex O’Loughlin Talks "Criminal Minds" & His Real Fans

If you didn’t get to catch Alex O’Loughlin as the unsub on Criminal Minds this week, he’s talking to TV Guide about his role on the episode, and more importantly his new lead on the upcoming CBS drama, Three Rivers. This is the perfect video preview for this episode. After seeing this, all I can say is that someone is “toast” in this scene.

The Criminal Minds episode called The Big Wheel, features O’Loughlin as a serial killer named Vincent who reaches out to the BAU to help him stop in his murderous crime spree. The episode was written by Simon Mirren, directed by Rob Hardy, and also stars Erika Alexander, Martha Anne Madison, and Jake Cherry.

More On CBS Drama Three Rivers

O’Loughlin says he never fails to have a fan ask him when Moonlight is starting back up, and although he has to disappoint them with the answer, he pleads with fans of Moonlight to give Three Rivers a chance. He also made the comment that his real fans will follow him no matter where he goes.

Three Rivers is a new medical pilot that follows him as Dr. Andy Yablonski, and is set in Pittsburgh where three rivers meet (Ohio, Allegheny, and Monongahela). Each episode tells the story of an organ donor, and the life and death involved in the process of organ donoring.

Off the cuff, I can see why the premise seems a little un-exciting if you compare this to say, a vampire detective. However, if fans of Fox’s House first read the premise for that successful series, they might have had the same reaction at first.

What do you think the chances are for the success of this series?  More importantly, how did he do as an unsub?

Alex was fabulous as the unsub! He was unrecognizable as the extremely obsessive compulsive Vincent. I don’t think many actors could have pulled it off as well as Alex did. The ending was very moving — it was a first for me to feel sorry for a serial killer. I’m looking forward to seeing him in Three Rivers; just a couple of weeks more and we’ll know if it makes it to series. Fingers crossed!

Being a fellow Australian, I am immensely proud of Alex O’Loughlin. His portrayal of Vincent in CM was terrific and I have no doubt that Alex as Dr Andy in Three Rivers will be totally outstanding. This guy not only acts the role, he feels it.
