I wonder how many fans are still looking for clues to the plot? According to press, X-Files series creator Chris Carter has only shared one simple clue: “Mulder and Scully are drawn back into the world of the X-Files by a case”. As for the title of the film, Carter has suggested that the poster on Mulder’s office wall, and the phrase, “I want to believe” seem to say something about Mulder’s faith.

Chris Carter has also said the scare factor is the major goal of the film, by saying, “The film encompasses all the best things people loved about the show. It’s scary, creepy, and has a good mystery. With The X-Files, we often scared people by what they didn’t show, and we use that device for the movie.”

Writer/producer Frank Spotnitz reminds us that the best part of the The X-Files series was that it made us afraid of anything, because the stories were atypical. I can think of quite a few episodes that made me of afraid things I would normally never imagine.

If the film, although being a stand alone story, goes back to its roots the way Chris Carter says it does, we are in a for a great story. For extra bonus points, we should have a resolve on this complicated Mulder & Scully relationship.

What’s different about this comic is that it heralds the movie release, and gives the fans a bit of something extra in the Mulder and Scully mythology.

Written by Frank Spotnitz, and published by Wildstorm/DC Comics, the storyline takes place right in the timeline of the popular TV series. Frank Spotnitz says he wanted the story to be what all the fans are familiar with, which is the TV series, so they can jump right into the serialized version which has all the usual suspects, (and thankfully Mulder and Scully still working as FBI and on the X-files cases).

Artwork was done by Brian Denham, noted artist and illustrator for Marvel Comics. As you can see from Brian’s blog, Illcraft.com, he’s totally excited about this project. The “special” consists of 40 pages, is in color, and it seems it will be available for $2.99 on July 23 (and that’s $1.00 less than a gallon of gas here now)!

The film “takes place in the present”, and the “sprawling alien mythology” is not part of the plot, according to Carter. He also said that Fox has ideas on what the name of the film should be. Could this mean there’s disagreement in the air?

If you were wondering if Mulder and Scully are still FBI agents in the movie, take heart, as the film is “true to Mulder and Scully, who they are and where they would be this point in their lives” and all of the experiences they had. I’m not sure if this clears things up, but at least we know a bit more of the truth.

It was revealed that there is a “reference” to Scully’s son, William, who was later adopted in the TV series. I’m glad we don’t have to pretend that Scully never had a son, because that would be awkward for anyone, even with a film character. 

It seems this is going to be a very different film. Yet it will still explore Mulder and Scully’s relationship, which I think is mainly what we all want….to see if our favorite FBI heroes ultimately are happy, and whether they get to walk off into the sunset together (after handling some new threat that befalls us all of course). This and other info came out as Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz spoke at Wondercon about our favorite FBI drama.

A trailer was shown which features a chase scene with Billy Connolly’s character, Mulder, Scully and Amanda Peet’s character (whom we now know as Agent Dakota Whitney).

Although info was revealed about filming, there’s still much secrecy regarding the plot, and the nature of the relationship between Mulder and Scully. Can you stand the suspense? I know I can’t.

I think many just don’t care, and want to see Skinner back. Some of the best FBI drama of the series was the episodes that featured Skinner, and his run-ins with the Cigarette Man, Krycek, and the Lone Gunmen.

Assistant Director Skinner was always one of the most credible characters on the show. He’s a Vietnam War veteran and former Marine. His fights with Mulder were classic. In the movie, it’ll be interesting to see if he is still Mulder and Scully’s boss, and if he’ll be the voice of reason when things start to get hairy at the FBI. I always felt that if people like Skinner were really a part of the FBI, there was hope for the world yet.

As for rumors, it’s been suggested that the werewolf head picture was a fake to mislead us. Also, pre-production of the movie began in early August, instead of November. What this means for us? Maybe there’s more work done than we realize, which can make for an even better film.

I wanted to post these pictures of Xzibit last month, but then we didn’t have the scoop we do now, which is courtesy of the man himself in his own personal blog. He gets personal about this FBI drama, particularly on what happened when he found out he’d gotten the role.

He talks about how the WGA Strike stopped his Oliver Stone Pinkville project cold, how much he enjoyed talking with Chris Carter, and particularly how cold it was (and still is) in Canada right now. He also mentioned that Billy Connolly (Lemony Snicket, The Last Samurai) is a part of the cast. 

Xzibit reveals that the crew members of the Untitled X-Files project have been working extremely hard despite the cold and the schedule. That’s what I love to hear. I’ve read that he has always been a real fan of the show, and it’s exciting to know that the actors are so stoked to be there.

There’s even been some pictures circulating that depict a wolf head on the production set.  You can see the photo below and draw your own conclusions.

One update on the untitled X-Files sequel is that the director’s guild production list for British Columbia has a new project named Done One, and some believe this is the code name for the project.

Actor Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood, Live Free or Die Hard) is rumored to have been tapped for a small role because of a recent comment he made on an LA radio show. I think the details we’ve gotten so far about this movie are great, so let’s continue to drive ourselves crazy with speculation until July. I can think of no better project for it!

• When Chris Carter began his idea of The X-Files, he wanted to present FBI agents investigating paranormal events, but felt the beliefs of the characters were key to the success of the plot as well.
• Some shows that were spinoffs of The X-Files were Millennium, The Lone Gunman and Harsh Realm. All of these shows referenced each other.

The info leaked about this movie has been pretty consistent as far as the fact that it will be a stand-alone film, not a sequel to the first. Does this mean there’s no chance of any romance between Scully and Mulder? Will Skinner be back, and will this be business as usual for the FBI? What does this collection of actors mean for our favorite FBI drama? Time will tell!
