NBC’s Meredith Vieira interviews FBI director Robert Mueller at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia, specifically in Hogan’s Alley, a special training ground area for the agents. You can see the full interview in a TV Guide/Hulu video interview.

According to Mueller, what makes a good FBI agent is someone who has experience, judgement and the capability to handle the power (gun and badge) given to them. One compelling  aspect of the agency is how much things have changed since September 11.

Mueller was sworn in as Director, and a week later, America was attacked via 9/11. It was noted that this attack changed everything for the FBI, as the burden to prevent another attack has fallen squarely on their shoulders.

In the interview, he notes some of the FBI’s low and high points. Besides unnamed thwarted attacks, the UnaBomber, World Trade Center bombings, East Africa bombings, and the Cole bombings are the high points he named. Vieira noted Waco, and Ruby Ridge as the low points for the agency.

There are 46 leafs on the shield of the FBI which represent the 46 states in the union at the time the agency was created. The blue background symbolizes justice, the red is for courage, and the beveled edge is for the challenges facing the FBI.

In December I talked about Imagine TV/Brian Grazer’s project with Fox, The FBI. The latest news from Hollywood Reporter is not so good, as Fox has passed up this project.  Now, CBS and TNT are both interested in this new FBI drama, as it’s being shopped around to other networks. Fox paid a penalty by passing up this series, so it makes you wonder what went wrong.

What this means for us is a bit of a wait until one of these networks makes a decision. How hard can it be when you have a series about the world’s top investigative organization, full backing from the agency itself, and an amazing plot – an Iraqi war vet becomes tapped as head of the FBI’s new Critical Incidents Response Group. To top it off, the story is based on a real person. Chap Taylor (Changing Lanes) is the writer for this project.

You can never tell what sort of behind-the-scenes logistics are required to make a series like this, but we hope that it’s nothing too serious (politics, lawsuits, etc.) since Imagine and 20 Century Fox are not commenting.

With Brian Grazer’s amazing list of work in production for a multitude of television and movie projects (it’s in his blood, people), and his fascination with the FBI, Fox has high hopes for this new series. Not only that, the real FBI are completely on board with this project. What does all this mean for us as FBI drama enthusiasts?

Hopefully it means that we’ll have a new TV show that gives us some of the real deal when it comes to the modern day FBI, presented in an entertaining yet adventurous package.

Let’s cross our fingers, and look out for The FBI on Fox, based on real life agent John O’Neill. The plot centers around an Iraqi war veteran who is appointed as the new head of the FBI’s Critical Incidents Response Group. Fox has said they plan for a Monday time slot, right along side the other government-themed show, 24.
