No. 3 – Mississippi Burning

Mississippi Burning is based on a real investigation into the murders of civil rights workers in the 1960s. Two FBI agents are both up against the silence of a southern community, as well as each other, as they differ in their investigative approach.

Acting powerhouses Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe portray the agents. The film received Academy awards for cinematography and acting (Gene Hackman) among others. It also received some critical huff from many, including historians. Unfortunately, this can happen when you create a film based on such controversial events.

No. 2 – Face/Off

John Travolta is here again as a good…and bad FBI agent!

In Face/Off, John Travolta is an FBI agent (Sean Archer) who must assume the physical appearance (via “a revolutionary new medical technique”) of the nation’s most dangerous criminal and terrorist, Castor Troy (Nicholas Cage). Whether you like the science or not, this film has everything from amazing chase scenes, drama of Archer and his family, bad guy Castor Troy’s family drama, and even a bit of prison drama.

Directed by John Woo, this film was wildly successful in the box office ($23 million in the opening weekend in June of 1997), and it is still popular. Both Cage and Travolta portray 2 characters in this film.

No. 1 – The X-Files: Fight The Future

This list of Top 7 FBI movies would not be complete without having one of the most anticipated FBI movies, The X-Files: Fight The Future. In fact, this movie was being filmed while the popular TV series was in hiatus between seasons, and just as for the upcoming new X-Files movie, filmmakers were forced to keep the production secret.

These 7 films all performed differently in the box office, however, they are the most notable for their portrayal of the FBI on the big screen.

I’ve had a great time looking at the movies here, and now I’m heading to the nearest Blockbuster for a bit of FBI movie fun myself.

In The Punisher, FBI Agent Frank Castle (Thomas Jane) is taken revenge upon by powerful mob boss Howard Saint (John Travolta) for the death of Saint’s son, who died during an arms deal that went bad. Watch the trailer from this compelling film here:

Saint decides to kill Castle, but Castle survives with the help of a witch doctor…yes, I said witch doctor. This film is based on the Marvel comic’s tale of the same name.

Without help from his own agency (FBI) and law enforcement, Castle becomes the punisher, and takes what could have been an average FBI film to a new level, of revenge, deception, and nasty punishment.

Thomas Jane as the Punisher was in my opinion, the only actor who could have succeeded in this role. Evidently others felt the same, as it was noted that he was the first and only actor asked to play the role, and turned it down twice before eventually saying yes.

His character is very multi-layered and his ideals seem to appeal to the basic instincts of right and wrong within all of us. My only regret is that just as in the comic, his character seems to never truly find peace.

The Kingdom stars Jamie Fox, Chris Cooper, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman and Ashraf Barhom.

In an America housing complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a bomb detonates during a softball game, killing many Americans and Saudi Police. As the Saudi government decide they must investigate this matter on their own, a lead FBI agent in the U.S. assembles a small team of agents, and is secretly given access to investigate the incident.

Emotions (drama) are high in the very beginning because a colleague was a victim as well as many innocents! Once the team arrives, they are met with much stone walling and suspicion. With just 5 days to complete the investigation, they must use other means to gain real access to the evidence.

The case is solved, but not without some bloodshed, as the team becomes face to face with the killer. I enjoyed the movie because of the pace, and the relationship developed between Jamie Fox’s character and that of the Saudi army officer portrayed by Ashraf Barhom.
